Raised in communist Bulgaria, Albena Azmanova often heard that life was “not normal”. A feeling that more and more people have about their own situation nowadays.

Albena calls it ‘precarity capitalism’, in which both the losers and winners are unhappy. She shows that the cause of our current problems isn’t necessarily inequality but insecurity. Society has become extremely competitive both at the top and at the bottom.
She is one of the most original thinkers on capitalism of today. She wrote Capitalism on edge. “The big think-book of our time”, according to James Galbraith. She makes a plea on how to combine social and ecological justice. Not by a revolution, but because we discover that this is “not normal”.

Toen ze opgroeide in het communistisch Bulgarije kreeg Albena Azmenova vaak te horen dat hun leven ‘niet normaal’ was. Een gevoel dat steeds meer mensen tegenwoordig ook over hun eigen situatie hebben.

Albena noemt dit ‘precarity capitalism’, waarin niet alleen de verliezers ongelukkig zijn, maar ook de winnaars. Ze laat zien dat de kern van onze huidige problemen niet zozeer door ongelijkheid komt, maar door onzekerheid. De samenleving is zowel aan de onderkant als de bovenkant extreem competitief geworden.
Zij is één van de meest originele denkers over het kapitalisme van dit moment. Zij schreef ‘Capitalism on edge’. “The big think-book of our time”, aldus James Galbraith. Ze houdt een pleidooi over hoe je sociale en ecologische rechtvaardigheid kan laten samengaan. Niet door een revolutie, maar omdat wij doorkrijgen dat dit “niet normaal” is.
