In Cairo Conspiracy we meet Adam, who inadvertently becomes a pawn in the conflict between Egypt’s religious and political elites. This new film by Tarik Saleh (The Nile Hilton Incident) is a blistering political thriller providing insight into a secret world.
The simple fisherman’s son Adam, played by Tawfeek Barhom, is offered the privilege to study at the prestigious Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the center of power of Sunni Islam. When the university’s highest ranking religious leader suddenly dies, the religious and political powers that be turn out to have opposite interests. Unknowingly, Adam is recruited by the state officer to influence the election of the new Grand Imam. When he discovers this, he finds himself caught between two fires.
Cairo Conspiracy won the prize for ‘best screenplay’ at the Cannes Film Festival. The film has been submitted by Sweden (homeland of director Saleh) as an Oscar candidate for Best Foreign Language Film.
