When war is called peace, propaganda is bombed to truth and hatred is elevated to love, then life begins to resemble death. Director Sergei Loznitsa gives a ‘practical guide’ for surviving in such a hell.
In this case that hell has a specific name: the East-Ukrainian Donbass, where criminal gangs, the local army and Russian troops fight each other on the streets. There is fear, anger and suspicion everywhere, but what is real and what is fake news? With actors and residents from the region, Loznitsa recreates films that go around on social media to show that the truth is often stranger than fiction.
His episodic fictionalization, which earned him the prize for Best Director in the Cannes program Un Certain Regard, emphasizes the grotesque of situations that are strange and disturbing. Full of very dark humor, Loznitsa shows us a society in decline, while absurd comedy gradually turns into absurd tragedy.
On a weekly basis we now offer you film screenings with English subtitles. That way, people from all over the world who would like to go to the cinema but feel inhibited, either because they cannot understand the spoken language or do not have a sufficient understanding of the Dutch language to read the subtitles, will still be able to enjoy the films we screen.
