Il traditore tells the true story behind the Maxi trial (1986-1992) against the Palermo mafia in which the existence of the Cosa Nostra was proven.
In the early 1980s, the struggle between the various Mafia clans in Italy reached its peak. Tommaso Buscetta, a high-ranking member of the Cosa Nostra, goes into hiding in Brazil. Meanwhile, his confidants are murdered one by one. When Buscetta is arrested by the Brazilian police and then extradited to Italy, he makes a decision that will change the history: he will be the first to break the omertà (obligation to remain silent) and make the internal functioning of the organization public. This decision is partly based on the murder of his sons and brothers by another Mafiaclan. His testimony leads to the first major lawsuit against organized crime.
