The award-winning Italian director Alice Rohrwacher combines a magical fairy tale with social realism to create a wonderful story.
Lazzaro Felice follows country boy Lazzaro, who lives in a small community of farmers in a deserted village in Italy. The villagers are exploited and complain a lot, but they are hardworking and have a good relationship. Lazzaro in particular is genuinely happy with his simple but hard life. A magical combination of circumstances ensures a remarkable movement of time and space, after which Lazzaro ends up in a modern fairy tale.
Rohrwacher was already very successful with her film Le meraviglie (The Wonders), with which she won the Grand Prix in Cannes. This latest film is also well received; the film won the prize for the Best Scenario in Cannes and was immediately named a classic by The New York Times.
