Synopsis
In 1858 in the Jewish district Bologna, soldiers enter Mortara’s house. They take the seven your old Edgardo who has been secretly baptized by his nanny as a baby and therefore Edgardo has to be raised Catholic. His parents are left in despair and hope that their son will be returned. Mortara’s story soon becomes a political battle.
Rapito tells the true story of Edgardo Mortara, whose life is inextricably connected to a united Italy. Mortara spent his last years in Belgium, at the Bouhay convent and passed away in 1940 at Liège. Bellocchio brought this controversial story to life for which he has received multiple awards and nominations.
