Remo Manfredini was once a legendary jockey, but his self-destructive behavior led him astray. Now he races primarily to pay off his enormous debts to a criminal gang led by the shady mafia boss Sirena.
During the most important race of his life, things go wrong: Remo causes a tragic accident that kills one of his most prized horses. He himself is seriously injured. After waking up in the hospital, he flees. With his head still bandaged, he assumes a new identity and roams the streets of Buenos Aires, fleeing from Sirena.
With its absurd humor and sharp contrasts, El Jockey is reminiscent of the work of Wes Anderson, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Aki Kaurismäki. It is the new film from Luis Ortega, the leading Argentinian director known for his poetically charged and visually intense style. Ortega achieved international fame with El ángel (2018), which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival and, like El Jockey, was submitted to the Oscars.
With El Jockey, Ortega presents a tragicomic study of fame, alienation, and identity. It stars Nahuel Pérez Biscayart as a former sports hero searching for himself and Úrsula Corberó (Tokio in La casa de papel) as his lover and rival. The film premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival and won, among other awards, the Horizontes Latinos Award in San Sebastián.
