Roadmovie in a dystopic near-future Brazilië, in which growing old is increasingly criminalized
77-year-old Tereza, born and raised in an industrial town on the edge of the Amazon, is suddenly ordered to leave her home. The state forces her to be moved into a so-called “senior citizen colony,” a place where seniors are supposed to “enjoy” their final years so the younger generation can fully dedicate themselves to growth and productivity.
But Tereza refuses to accept this inhumane measure. Instead of giving up her freedom, she embarks on a clandestine boat trip through the Amazon. What follows is a journey through lush landscapes full of obstacles, unexpected encounters, and a growing realization that freedom knows no age.
The Blue Trail is a rebellious road movie by Gabriel Mascaro (Neon Bull) about old age, resistance, and the right to keep dreaming. This Brazilian film blends social urgency with an atmospheric, evocative narrative style and shows that growing older can also have a very different face.
The Blue Trail won the Silver Bear (Grand Jury Prize) at this year’s Berlinale and has received international acclaim.
