Film adaptation of a classic about alienation and guilt
The Stranger is based on Albert Camus’s world-famous 1942 novel (L’Etranger), one of the best-selling French novels of all time. The film follows the Frenchman Meursault, a quiet and striking man in his early thirties, in Algiers in the 1930s.
Meursault attends his mother’s funeral without shedding a tear. The next day, he begins an affair with his colleague, Marie, and quickly falls back into his daily routine. But his everyday life is disrupted by his neighbor, Raymond Sintès, who draws Meursault into his shady dealings. Until, one hot day, a fateful event takes place on the beach… When Meursault appears in court, he seems to be judged not so much for his actions, but for his emotionless appearance. Can someone be sentenced to death for not crying at his mother’s funeral?
