About a Jewish boy waiting for his father
Orphan is a raw coming-of-age film by Hungarian Oscar winner László Nemes (Son of Saul, Sunset). Once again, we become privy to a poignant story set amidst the turmoil of the twentieth century in the heart of Europe.
Andor, a young Jewish boy, grows up in Budapest in 1957 in the shadow of the Hungarian Revolution, together with his stoic mother Klára. He was raised by her with the idealized image of his father Hirsch, and for eleven years he has been waiting for a man he has barely known. Andor’s life is turned upside down by the arrival of Berend Mihály, a rough man from the countryside. He seems to be linked to Klára’s mysterious past during the Second World War and claims to be his father.
