About All of a Sudden

All of a Sudden, the new film by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car, Evil Does Not Exist) was nominated for the Palme d’Or and resulted in leading actors Virginie Efira (Benedetta, Sibyl) and Tao Okamoto (The Wolverine) sharing the win of the price for best actress at Cannes. The Japanese-French collaboration was shot in Paris and shows another side of the metropole. All of a Sudden is a quiet, moving drama about friendship, care and mortality.

Marie-Lou is the director of a care home in Paris, and tries to break with convention by innovating methods of care. She’s met with vehement pushback from her team, who don’t think putting the residents’ wishes and dignity first is feasible. Marie-Lou’s life takes an unexpected turn when she meets Mari, a Japanese theatre director who is a cancer patient. As a close friendship grows between the two women, they bundle their forces in their fights to make the impossible possible.
