About Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse
In this underseen Agnes Varda gem from 2000, the renowned filmmaker follows different types of gleaners: people who pick up what was left behind. This entails crops, trinkets and impressions, making Varda a sort of gleaner herself.
The film explores our relation to habits of consumption and the role of the gleaner in society. The people Varda accompanies are a glimpse into an often-invisible class of people. Through the narrative, reflections on the people she’s following lead the filmmaker to reflections on her own relationship to her subjects, and whether she should count herself among them. Armed with a camcorder and no crew, Varda constructs a visual essay that leaves the viewer with plenty to think about.
