Award-winning documentary about the Chuschagasta community
Urgent, uncompromising, and ambitious. In her debut non-fiction work, Our Land, Argentine filmmaker Lucrecia Martel (Zama, La Ciénaga) examines a tragic, true story from various angles. The result is a crime documentary that is compelling on a narrative level as well as delivering a deeply sensory cinematic experience. Martel worked on Our Land for fourteen years before the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The documentary received international acclaim and awards in Locarno, London, and the US.
Northern Argentina, 2009. The province of Tucumán is a fertile agricultural region traditionally inhabited by the Chuschagasta community. Yet, businessman Dario Amín claims to be the owner of the land. When he and two accomplices serve an eviction order to 300 Chuschagasta, a confrontation ensues that ends with the murder of 68-year-old community leader Javier Chocobar. The act is captured on video, but it takes another nine years of protests before the perpetrators appear in court. For Amín and his accomplices, the dispute over the territory is a purely business matter, but for the Chuschagasta community, their roots, their identity, and their survival are also at stake.
