Portrait of Napels and its predecessor, Pompeii
A masterful film documentary about Naples and its predecessor, Pompeii — one of the oldest cities in the world. Through breathtaking black-and-white imagery, Gianfranco Rosi weaves together everyday scenes into a spirited portrait of the city, its inhabitants, and the fragile beauty of all that is at risk of vanishing. The score is by Oscar winner Daniel Blumberg (The Brutalist), who treats sound as an integral part of the landscape itself.
For this film, Rosi spent three years exploring both the world above ground and the subterranean realm stretching between Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples. Despite the bustle and cheer of their city, Neapolitans live with the constant awareness that Vesuvius could erupt at any moment. Rosi visits the ruins of Pompeii and the clandestine tunnels dug beneath them by grave robbers seeking ancient artifacts for the black market. He follows children receiving tutoring from an elderly bookseller, as well as emergency dispatchers who use wit to soothe the fears of callers whenever the ground trembles. The passion, warmth, and humor of his subjects draw you into a film that gradually gets under your skin and lingers long after the credits roll.
