About The Beloved

The Beloved is an intense family drama by Oscard-nominated director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Las Bestias, Madre), which premiered at Cannes. Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall) delivers one of the most layered performances of his career, opposite Victoria Luengo (The Room Next Door). In The Beloved, Sorogoyen tells a piercing and nuanced story about parent-child dynamics, artistry, and the thin line between love and manipulation.

The lauded director Esteban Martínez (Javier Bardem) is a legend, both because of his impressive body of work and his infamous past of alcohol, violence and excess. When he returns to Spain after thirteen years of absence for the shooting of his new film, he unexpectedly offers his estranged daughter Emilia (Victoria Luengo) the main role. What starts out as a chance for reconciliation, soon turns out to be an emotional minefield. As father and daughter meet on set, the lines between fiction and reality blur and old wounds inexorably start surfacing.
