Feature film debut about resistance and choosing your own path
Silent Rebellion is a powerful drama about finding the courage to choose one’s own path, defying the stifling norms of society. The film speaks urgently to our current times, in which women’s rights and self-determination are once again under pressure. Silent Rebellion is the feature film debut of Marie-Elsa Sgualdo and premiered in Venice. The film was subsequently selected for many international festivals and won two major Swiss awards.
Switzerland, 1943. In a traditional Protestant mountain village, fifteen-year-old Emma works as a maid for a wealthy family. She hopes to realize her quiet dream of becoming a nurse by winning the village’s virtue prize. But when a wealthy young man rapes her and she becomes pregnant, her world begins to crumble. Desperate, Emma seeks a scandal-free way out, which she finds in a marriage to fellow villager Paul. Torn apart by social pressure and her growing self-worth, however, she begins to resist – against her new role, against the hypocrisy of her fellow villagers, and against the soldiers sending war refugees back to occupied territory.
